Georgiana Craik was born in Old Brompton, London, England. She began writing for Household words, the fortnightly newspaper co-founded by Charles Dickens, as early as 1851. She published her first novel, Riverston, in 1857. In 1886 Craik married the artist Allan Walter May and continued to write voluminously.
